Document Freedom Workshop'2012 is being organized by Kolkata Chapter of Indian GNU/Linux Users Group in collaboration with Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, the Fedora Project and Institute of Open Technology and Applications (IOTA) on the 28th and 29th of March'2012 at ISI, Kolkata.

The dates of this workshop are set to coincide with Document Freedom Day - a day to celebrate information accessibility and open standards. We stand by FSFE's views on what open standards ought to be, "Open Standards allow people to share all kinds of data freely and with perfect fidelity. They prevent lock-in and other artificial barriers to interoperability, and promote choice between vendors and technology solutions". Our understanding of open standards has the goal of making sure people find it easy to migrate to Free software or between Free software solutions. In simpler terms, we are also speaking about ensuring basic sanity for concepts of freedom of knowledge to be admissible in society.

The main goal of our workshop, within this broad framework, is to empower people from diverse backgrounds with skills in free software (as in freedom). Specifically we will be focussing on powerful tools for publishing, DTP, documentation, ICT and education. Such skills would also permit the participants to transform their respective fields of work to substantial extents apart from boosting their CVs. All participants will be provided with certificates of participation.
