A Seminar on "FOSS in EDUCATION" was organized on the 18th of September, 2010 by the Kolkata SFD-team ILUG-CalInfo.
SOFTWARE FREEDOM DAY'2010 REPORT : ILUG-CALINFO
This time the Kolkata team Ilug-CalInfo organised a seminar on "FOSS in Education" at DPS India. Our abstract programme schedule was implemented as:
PROGRAMME SCHEDULE
We had more than 25 participants from Ilug-CalInfo, DPS and other places. Many other intending participants could not make it due to the heavy rains that lasted all through the day.
J. P. Mathews spoke on ALFRESCO - an enterprise CMS and mentioned adaptation of the system to the nedds of educational set ups.
A. Mani spoke on the motivations for digitization of printed books, related open hardware designs, the process of capturing pages as images, e-book formats, basics of post processing images, new FOSS tools -(Scan Tailor, SIGIL) and OCR. The slides of the talk can be downloaded from this link.
Stephanie Das Gupta overviewed different applications in the KDE Educational Suite and dealt with details of KGeography including the process of creating new maps and the 'kgml' subset of KDE specific XML. The slides of the talk can be downloaded from this link.
Arijit Majumder spoke about basics of setting up a network for schools and small business set ups. The process of installation and management of the differently coloured network through custom distributions like IPCOP was also covered in the talk. The audience displayed keen interest in the talks and caused many aspects to be discussed in more detail. Plenty of Ubuntu-10.04 CDs were distributed before, during and after the event.
