from 17:30 hrs till 19:30 hrs.
This meeting was well attended and all of the following members
attended (in random order):
- 1. A. Mani
- 2. Nirmalya Lahiri
- 3. J. P. Mathews
- 4. Indranil Das Gupta
- 5. Ashwin Mansinghka
- 6. Prashant Verma
- 7. Rajib Bandopadhyay
- 8. Rohit Dutt
- 9. Suman Ghosal
- 10. Riman Pathak
- 11. Arijit Sarkar
- 12. Amit Kumar Barman
- 13. Ananta Ghosh
- 14. Pankaj Giri
- 15. Prabir Karmakar
It was decided to conduct few workshops in conjunction with CSI,
Kolkata on topics like "Alfresco and Other CMS", "R and SciLab" and other topics. Prashant
Verma, J. P. Mathews, Suman Ghosal and others will be coordinating the
first workshop, while A. Mani, Indranil Das Gupta and others will be
dealing with the second.
Some Ubuntu CDs were distributed by A. Mani.
Ashwin spoke at length on low powered telecommunication, mobile towers
and his involvement in the same.
Indranil reported that the FSMWB (http://www.fsmwb.org) had undertaken
popularisation and awareness programmes at the ground level in
different districts including Bankura.
It should be remembered that without strong movements for
popularisation of FOSS and active participation in use and
development, both FOSS and OSS may find survival difficult. Mere
corporate support for OSS is illusory and will always be subject to
subversion.
Rajib spoke about a problem with detection of built-in web cam in his
HP laptop (in Debian). He repeated his demand for a forum for
interaction and wanted post moderation instead of any level of
moderation of the mailing list. Many members pointed out operational
difficulties and comedies with such an approach. A forum using a Joomla plugin will be implemented soon.
It may be noted that the present mailing list is not usually moderated.
Open Standards Initiative and problems with WTO agreements and other
issues were also discussed.
All hospitality was managed by JPM.
